North Carolina certainly didn't score high marks on this year’s infrastructure report card.

The state is looking at a C- for the condition of area bridges, roads, and structures.

"In North Carolina, and around the US, there are certainly a backlog of infrastructure improvements,” said Matt Jordan of Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.

The American Society of Civil Engineers scored nine categories across the state. Airports got a D+, with serious structural and pavement issues. Bridges are considered structurally deficient and at risk of causing major traffic congestion. They got a C-. Our roads aren't doing well either, scoring a D- because engineers say poor road conditions contribute to billions of dollars in motorist repairs. Our schools scored a C-. They are in need of drastic renovations.

Here's some good news though, drinking water and wastewater systems both improved their grades from last year. It may be time for North Carolina to raise their grades, but making infrastructure repairs cost money. The Cape Fear Utility Authority said they'll to their best to choose what projects are essential during these hard economic times. For more information, you can visit the ASCE web site.
