WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH -- Soon the temperatures will heat up and it'll be time to head outside to play. With water all around us there are plenty of ways to have fun in the sun.
It seems like you can't go to any beach around here without seeing surfers and you might think you had to be super fit, have all the equipment and be an excellent swimmer to surf, but it turns out that's not true.
Ed Pickett has been surfing for over 30 years and teaches people of all ages how to surf.
Pickett said, "Some people will learn the basics in one lesson and they'll be standing up riding waves and they will take that information and then go try it themselves for a while."
First you learn the basics on the shore, starting with how to pop up on the board.
Pickett said, "Just explode that right leg. That right leg comes all the way up, comes all the way across."
Also watch out for the board when it comes at your face. Because if you don't, well, it hurts.
For the second lesson Pickett says you would learn to control your board, improve your stance and develop your timing to catch the waves.
