Farmers' markets to accept food stamps

A Columbus County farmers' market now accepts electronic benefits cards, commonly known as food stamps. Shoppers will swipe their EBT cards and receive tokens worth one dollar each to buy fruits and vegetables. Farmers then redeem the tokens with the market manager. The program was launched by Leaflight, a non-profit organization that aims to link farmers with the needy. The Wilmington Riverfront Farmers' Market was just approved to accept food stamps as well. That will start June 1st.
