Topsail High School hosted Pender County's Special Olympics Friday. Eighty-five kids from special needs programs across the county participated. They competed in sporting events like races, long jump, and softball. The teachers have been coaching the kids in PE class for the past six weeks. Friday, the kids showed off their skills to the crowd. Event coordinator Danielle Platt said, "A lot of them don't get to participate in sports or group activities outside of school so this is a time for these athletes to be able to compete against their peers and have an equal chance with each other." Participant Dylan clark said, "I like running and softball throw, I like decorating cupcake and eating oatmeal cream pie and singing the oath." Some Topsail High School honors students took the day off from school to help out at the event.
