The impact of North Carolina's billion-dollar budget deficit is being felt all the way to the shoreline at Fort Fisher. Budget cuts mean no lifeguards at the beach. With so many people flocking to the area for the Memorial Day weekend, the towns of Kure Beach and Carolina Beach along with the Federal Point Fire Department have been forced to pick up the slack. Park rangers have also tried to warn beachgoers that they're swimming at their own risk. “In an effort to make-do with that we have posted several signs throughout the park that say no lifeguards on duty in both English and Spanish,” said Ft. Fisher Park Superintendent Jeff Owen. That did little to keep most people out of the water. Kure Beach loaned Ft. Fisher two lifeguards, but that meant fewer lifeguards stationed in Kure Beach.
