More than 60% of U.S. households now contain at least one personal computer, and many have multiple machines. The rate of computer ownership is soaring, but the injury rate from computers is increasing even faster, according to a new study. Researchers from Nationwide Children's Hospital examined a national database for computer-related injuries that were serious enough to be seen In the emergency department. They found that computer ownership increased 300% over the course of the 13-year study, but injuries from computers rose by more than 700%. The most common accidents occurred when patients were caught on or tripped over computer equipment. However, 1 in 5 injuries were due to computer equipment falling on the patient. Children less than 5 years old were the most likely to be hurt. Experts recommend small children always have supervision when using computers. To further reduce injuries, doctors say computers should be kept on a stable surface, away from walking paths, with all cords and cables safely bundled and tucked out of sight.
