New Hanover High School students rehearsed for one of the most memorable days of their lives - their high school graduation. There are some impressive students in the bunch. Ashley Brown has kept a full plate as a member of the Junior ROTC, the National Honor Society and an active volunteer. "I've done school cleanups, fundraisers, car washes, and the fish fry. I go down to the soup kitchen. When I don't have to work, I go to the Japanese Culture Club," she said. Ashley's mom said she is extremely proud of her oldest child, who will attend Meredith College in the fall. Ashley's done her part at home, too. She works at Food Lion and contributes part of her pay check to the family's income, without a second thought. Ashley said, "They're my family, I love them, they need me, I'll help. It's normal." Joe Sigman is another New Hanover High student who is doing great for himself. He has high functioning autism and has made a lot of progress over his high school years. In fact, staff nominated him for New Hanover's Most Improved Senior. “I was about ready to cry when I got it because I didn't know,” said Joe. “It was a total surprise and total shock that they thought I have improved that much." Joe enjoys volunteering with the sheriff's office, but computers are his passion. This summer he has been working at as an IT Specialist at Rex and Son's RV's. Joe said, "I work on their computers, I've been on a few out of town trips, worked with bigger dealerships, setting up networks, setting up servers and installing software." Joe will study computer engineering at Cape Fear Community College. Joe and Ashley will graduate with their New Hanover High peers at Trask Coliseum Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Ashley High School's ceremony is at 9:00 a.m., Hoggard's at 12:30 p.m., and Laney's at 7:30 p.m. - all at Trask Saturday. The graduation for the Mosley Performance Learning Center is at 7:00 p.m. Friday night at the Minnie Evans Arts Center.
