This month, our Cape Fear Pride series focuses on Burgaw. Today we take a closer look at some of the recognizable sites around the Pender County Courthouse. Damaris Griffith of Burgaw Middle School explains. Three points of interest located on the Courthouse Square include areas of history from 1861 to present day. A grave marker honors Company K. This company, known as the Holly Shelter Volunteers was organized in New Hanover County and enlisted at Dogwood Grove on June 1, 1861. Research indicates that this piece of history was uncovered from the Murraytown area and permanently located on the square. The inscription summarizes its importance. ‘Let future generations remember that these were men whom death could not terrify, whom defeat could not dishonor, that truth, courage and patriotism endure forever’. The John T. Wells Post 9826 on the south side of the square erected the Veterans of Foreign War Monument on May 29, 1989. Its purpose continues to honor those from Pender County who died while serving their country. The honored names list three from World War I, 44 from World War II, nine from the Korean War and 15 from the Vietnam War. Today this area is used on Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veteran's Day as the focal point for patriotic celebration to remind us of the dedication of our forefathers. The gazebo on the courthouse lawn was given to the town when crews filmed Date with an Angel in 1987. The gazebo is maintained by the town and is currently the site of weddings, prom pictures and children talking with Santa at Christmas. Just a reminder we'll be in downtown Burgaw for the N.C. Blueberry Festival this Friday for our Cape Fear Pride series. We'll be live for our 5:00, 5:30 and 6:00 shows.
