UNCW hosts conference on Native American awareness

More than 300 young Native Americans are gathered in Wilmington to learn about their cultures. UNCW is hosting the 30th Annual Indian Youth Unity Conference. Native Americans, ages 14 to 21 from nine tribes across the state, are participating in the four day event. They attended different workshops, including arts and crafts. The conference also aims to curb the high Native American college dropout rate. "They get a feel for the college campus and they get to walk around, and at the same time they get to think about whether maybe they'd like to attend here,” said Olivia Richardson. Some of the activities included learning Native American dances, and making baskets and quilts. The conference also included a pow-wow and Native American pageant and talent show.
