More than 100 kids participated in a free soccer clinic Friday evening at the MLK Center in Wilmington. The UNCW Seahawk soccer team and the Wilmington Hammerheads picked a hot day to hold a soccer clinic, but they did not hear any complaints from the youngsters in attendance, who for the most part have had little exposure to soccer. "The bottom line is this is a free clinic and we want the kids to come out and enjoy the best game in the world,” said UNCW Men’s Soccer Head Coach Aidan Heaney. “Some of the kids may never kick a soccer ball again. Some may end up getting bit by the bug and if they do that's fantastic and our sport benefits as well, and from a health standpoint it can only help the kids." A new inner city soccer program is in the works for the city of Wilmington; maybe these clinic participants will spread the word to their friends that soccer is a good sports option. "It's fun because you can kick it and do whatever you want with the ball except use your hands,” said Vianca Murray.
