Surf City Bridge still swinging, but barely?

READ MORE: Surf City Bridge still swinging, but barely?
It's been a staple of Surf City since 1955, but safety concerns have the department of transportation talking about replacing the Surf City Bridge. “The department of transportation has told us that it's close to outliving its time,” said Surf City Mayor Zander Guy. It's one of the few swing bridges left in the state. Surf City residents say it gives the beach community its charm. “I hate to see us lose the charm of the swing bridge. It makes the island kind of what it is, you know, kind of laid back,” said Surf City resident John Davis. Representatives from North Carolina Department of Transportation say charm may not be enough to save it. Surf City Mayor Zander Guy says the D.O.T gave the bridge a very low safety rating. “On a scale from one to 100 we're about a seven; that's what they're telling us.” On Thursday night, the first of several information workshops will be held about the proposed replacement plan. People are invited to share their concerns with planners and engineers. The DOT would like to replace the bridge by 2015. Meantime work crews will do their best to keep the old swing bridge swinging. If you want to find out more information about the planned bridge replacement, stop by the Surf City Community Building tomorrow; an informational workshop will be on-going from 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.
