When a restaurant does not like its score from a health inspector, it can ask for a reinspection. Usually that gives it time to correct the problems and improve its score significantly. Usually.
Earlier this month Zora's Seafood Market on Castle Street in Wilmington scored 85 with health inspectors. This time around, a different set of violations. Two points off because fish fillets in the reach-in cooler were too warm. Whole shell clams were in the display case on ice instead of under mechanical refrigeration where they belong. And the water heater needs checking because the hot water at a sink ranged from 111 degrees to 127 degrees. An improvement from 85 to 87.5, but that means Zora's is a low performer for the second time this month.
The lowest score, though, belongs to Domino's at 1600 Market Street in Wilmington, where an inspector said "effective measures shall be used" to get rid of all the flies. Bottles of chemicals were not labeled properly. There was no thermometer in reach-in coolers. There's not enough room in the refrigerator, which is difficult to maintain. Cornmeal was stored improperly. And several things need cleaning or replacing. 82.5 for Domino's on Market.
This week's highest score belongs to Bon Appetit at 3704 Carolina Beach Road. A half point off because drinks were stored on the floor of the cooler and the outside storage room needs cleaning. Add back a two-point bonus for workers passing a food safety course and a score of 101.5 for Bon Appetit.
A perfect score goes to Papa John's on Oleander Drive.
The same score of 100 belongs to La Costa in Porters Neck.
A half point off because the floor of the walk-in cooler needs cleaning at A Southern Thyme on Fountain Drive.
A score of 99.5 for the Henrietta III docked in Downtown Wilmington. Just a half point off because rusting shelves need to be replaced and the soda gun holsters need cleaning.
And a 99.5 as well for the Kangaroo Express on Eastwood, where they need to clean the floors near the refrigerator.
