A Wilmington family will be able to enjoy its tree for a few more days. The Joyce family and airport authorities met in court today to determine what happens next. There wasn't actually a hearing, but the court made an order. Ilm authorities agreed not to have the tree cut down until at least Monday and the Joyce family agreed not to interfere with its removal; if they do they will be subject to criminal contempt. In the meantime, the family is making one last plea, asking ILM to simply top the tree to 30 feet. Arborists say the oak would likely die gradually. We're told the F.A.A. prefers the tree cut down completely, but it's not a requirement.
