Each year, fireworks cause more than 30,000 fires and injure nearly 10,000 people. It is important to know how to use them safely, and to know what's legal. Brunswick County Emergency Services members gave WWAY a demonstration Thursday. In North Carolina, anything that moves across the ground or flies into the air is illegal. What is legal is something that emits showers or sparks, but sparklers actually cause the most injuries each year. "A lot of kids, even small kids, play with them. Their parents let them, they twirl them in the yard and those pieces of the metal and the powder wind up burning them,” said Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner. Many people travel to South Carolina to get fireworks that are illegal here. If you are caught with them, you can be fined.
