Easley: Wright should resign from N.C. House

READ MORE:

RALEIGH (AP) -- Governor Mike Easley also believes Representative Thomas Wright should resign.

The governor today added his voice to the growing list of those calling for Wright to step down after elections officials asked prosecutors to investigate Wright's campaign finances.

Easley says documentary evidence indicates illegal activity, and that the Democrat from New Hanover County should "move on."

Easley's comments came a day after House Speaker Joe Hackney said Wright should resign and asked the Legislative Ethics Committee to investigate his actions.

State Board of Elections investigators say evidence indicates Wright may have spent more than $240,000 in campaign donations on personal expenses.

Wright, who has served in the House since 1993 and not been charged with any crimes, said last night that he wouldn't step down.
