Our cell phones have become such a huge part of our lives, if something happens to them, we feel lost. But running right into the cell phone store isn't necessarily the best and most economical option. Manny "PapaGeek" Lloyd from Geeks in a Flash offers some tips, like putting old phones to good use. "Sometimes cell phone companies have what's called 'locked' but if they're not locked, which most cases they're not these days, it'll work just fine,” said Lloyd. “I can take my SIM card out of my phone and put it into yours and make a call." It may not work with every phone but if you have a SIM card in your cell, it's worth a shot. We were able to switch SIM cards in two T-Mobile phones and it worked. We tried the same with a T-Mobile phone and an AT&T phone, and had success as well. Ebay, Craigslist, and WilmingtonYardSales.com are other places you can usually find a decent deal - just do your research before you buy. "What you have to do is make sure the person you're buying it from has good ratings," said Lloyd. "One of things you want to always do is get the model number of the phone and do a Google search, because that phone inherently itself may just be a bad phone." You can check phone ratings and reviews at RipoffReport.com or epinions.com. Another option is to buy a prepaid wireless phone and transfer over your SIM card.
