RALEIGH (AP) -- A man shot by law enforcement officers died hours after he was shot as he climbed out of a car involved in a high-speed chase on Interstate 40.

The suspect is identified as Stephen Ryan Gibson of Raleigh. Gibson underwent surgery at Wake Medical Center.

The state Highway Patrol says the chase began after a man driving a white Chrysler 300 robbed a B-P Station in Magnolia in Duplin County late yesterday morning. Authorities followed the car on westbound I-40. Stop sticks were thrown in Johnston County to stop the car. A third set of stop sticks deflated the tires.

The driver lost control of the car and caused a chain-reaction wreck involving two other cars on the south side of Raleigh.

Troopers say they saw the suspect moving between the front seat and back seat. He climbed out of the passenger side with his torso showing and displaying a weapon. Four troopers and a Wake County sheriff's deputy fired at the suspect.
