Pender County Humane Society opens new shelter

READ MORE: Pender County Humane Society opens new shelter
The Pender Humane Society is a non-profit, no-kill shelter. Saturday marked the grand opening at their new location on Highway 53. Shelter manager Debbie Rye said the building is a dream come true and long overdue. "The kennels are large enough to hold two dogs each and we have nine kennels. Eventually, when we get enough money to complete the outdoor runs they'll be able to go in and out through doggie doors and we're really happy about that. We have a cat area. They will not be caged. They get to roam around as long as they don't fight and behave themselves." For now the Pender County Humane Society only has a handful of animals up for adoption, but that will change by Monday afternoon, when the new showcase will be home to more cats and dogs who will be looking for a permanent place to call home. "As an observer of the humane society, they are a small group of people here that have done a tremendous amount of work. Their dedication is unbelievable," said Barry Klingel of Paws of NC. Burgaw Mayor Pete Cowan said, "We certainly applaud the efforts of the society. This was certainly needed. They came to the table and here it is." One of the highlights of the facility is the backyard fenced in area. It even has a spray mist; it helps cool things off on those hot dog days of summer.
