Private guards face multiple layers of background checks in N.C.

READ MORE:

RALEIGH (AP) -- People who want to work as security guards in North Carolina must pass a series of background checks before they become an unarmed guard and even stricter hurdles to carry a gun.

Security guards also must be re-certified every year.

North Carolina's agency for regulating the guards is called Private Protective Services and it usually finds any criminal background an applicant may have.

Despite the background checks and training, average wages for security guards in North Carolina lags behind restaurant cooks and janitors.
