Local youngsters learn the importance of fire safety

Some area youngsters practiced fire safety with the pros Thursday. As part of Fire Prevention Week, members of the Wilmington Fire Department visited Milestones Learning Center in Wilmington. The kids learned about fire safety in the kitchen and other parts of the house. They practiced climbing out a window during a fire and got to check out the firefighters' trucks and equipment. WFD educators said it is never too early to teach kids fire safety. "The best fire is the one that never starts, so the Wilmington Fire Department, we just really want to get that message out of prevention and just how important it is," said Fire and Life Safety educator Andrea Good. Shannon and Kane Provencher attended the fire safety training and said, "Whenever there's a fire or an emergency or something, it's kind of hectic, so the more you practice the more you're going to stay calm and use your head and go back onto what you've learned." Fire Prevention Week runs from October 4th through the 10th. The Wilmington Fire Department has events planned throughout the month.
