Some people will complain about anything that comes from Washington these days, no matter what the money is being spent for. I understand complaints for items where the various political parties differ fundamentally. But now they're complaining about spending on education? I thought every candidate was vowing to try to do more for education, including those who lost in the elections.
NC is not exactly a top performer when it comes to the success rates in school. And Columbus County is not a high performer within our state. I would think that people would support spending to help our children attain academic success. It may lessen the chance that someday these children end up in the welfare office, or in the police blotter in the paper.
Sure, I wish these kids were being taught more at home by their parents. Maybe their parents can't read themselves, who knows. But at some point, I would hope that people would support breaking the cycle of illiteracy and dropouts. Our nation will be better off with more educated people. This program can give some kids a good start to their educations.
