I went to high school with this kid, actually. And though joining the army sounds like a possibility, if he told her he was joining on the 27th, it doesn't seem likely that he would already have gone to Ft. Benning for basic by the 29th. That timeline does not sound right to me at all, unless he had already joined and was calling to tell her that he was heading out for basic the NEXT DAY.
