“All of a sudden I see this white car basically just go airborne, and I watched the vehicle, paper flying and everything,” recalled witness Karl Deweese. The six car accident happened just after 9:00 a.m. on Martin Luther King Parkway. Deweese added, “I remember seeing it, my light turned green, and all I saw was just the explosion.” Police said a white Subaru Outback, with 4 passengers, was speeding down MLK towards Wrightsville Beach. Wilmington Police Department spokesperson Lucy Crockett said, “One person estimated it may have even been in excess of 100 miles per hour.” At the intersection of Kerr Avenue and MLK the Subaru ran a red light and hit a white pick-up truck. The accident killed one of the passengers in the Subaru and sent four others, including the driver of the pick-up, to the hospital in critical condition. Four other cars were hit during the collision. Police said the driver who caused the accident wasn't even driving his own car. “Investigators have already determined that the Subaru Outback was reported stolen in Wilmington on October 3rd,” said Crockett. Wilmington Police will not release the name of the person who was killed in the accident until they can contact family members. WPD accident reconstruction teams are working to verify all witness accounts of the crash.
