I actually have spent quite a bit of time in Europe, and I agree it is beautiful. But at the same time, the resources have been limited and I would say around 75-85% of those older residences are more often than not nearly or close to being un-inhabitable. We have a much higher standard of living and much higher standard of what constitutes a home here in the US. Not saying one is right or wrong, just how it is.
