Port City makes a great spot for small business

Fortune magazine ranked Wilmington number 14 on it's list of Best Mid-Size Cities to Launch your Business. With concerns over growing unemployment, rather than looking for a job people are choosing to create them. The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and UNCW's Entrepreneurship Center provide Fortune with information about economic and population growth in the Port City. Growing population means more goods and services are needed to support those people, and businesses are popping up to fill those needs. Between 2004 and 2007, small businesses grew by almost 13 percent each year. Continued small business growth should mean good news for unemployment. “The majority of new jobs that have been created in the US have not come from corporations, but instead have come from small businesses. So the more of those we have the better off we're going to be economically long-term,” said Jonathan Rowe of the UNCW Entrepreneurship Center. Rowe said part of the attraction is that Wilmington offers small businesses plenty of commercial real estate, an educated workforce, and a lower labor rate. To help foster the entrepreneurial spirit, UNCW created the Entrepreneurship Center. The center helps promote high growth businesses in southeastern North Carolina by bringing them together to learn from one another. The hope is growing those smaller businesses will help create more jobs.
