Cancer survivor's blog getting plenty of attention

READ MORE: Cancer survivor's blog getting plenty of attention
A local breast cancer survivor is being recognized for her work supporting others. Three-and-a-half years ago, Kate Burton found a lump on her breast; it turned out to be cancer. "I was sure I was going to die, I mean there was no question about it,” Burton said. “I was convinced I was going to die and my husband was going to have to raise the kids on his own, and that's pretty horrible." She fought the cancer for almost a year through extensive chemotherapy and radiation. In February 2007, she was pronounced cancer free. "My doctors were all fantastic, and they all did a great job and kept me alive but there's a lot of things that come up afterwards when you finish treatment that people don't really talk about very much,” Burton said. That lack of discussion is what inspired her to start writing a daily blog called After Cancer, Now What? Her blog has quite the following, more than one hundred thousand hits so far. She posts research, advocacy opportunities, and helpful resources for other cancer patients and survivors, but more than anything, Burton says the blog helps people relate. "I think the blog is as helpful for me as it is for anybody else, it's pretty therapeutic to find a group of people who find you and say oh I’ve been there, I know exactly what you're talking about, you have not lost your mind." Burton says blogging and the support of her family helped her get through the tough times; her sense of humor helps a little too... "Doing this blog is cheaper than therapy and I can do it in my pajamas so it saves everybody all around." Kate Burton recently won a contest put on by O'Cedar, the company that makes household products. She wrote a 200-word essay about what she would do with a thousand dollars. She wrote about her blog and said she'd use the money to buy another computer for her husband and kids to use since she hogs the only one in the house.
