I personally can atest to the fact that the military does not go far enough in enabling soldiers to handle job stress. Many time soldiers who try to seek help for stress are ridiculed by their peers and superior. They are often deemed as weak, wimps, babies, psychos, etc. I sought help for stress while deployed to Iraq not because I was on the brink of causing any harm to myself or others, but because I wanted to find out the cause of losing much of my hair. I wanted to know whether the hair loss was due to chemicals with which I may have come in contact, or job stress. Most of the time when you visit a stress clinic, your commanders are notified of the visit. After I had voluntarily gone to the stress clinic, I was taunted by some of the first sergeants and commanders in my battalion. It's a shame that soldiers who try to help themselves to prevent the incidents such as the one at Ft Hood, Texas and the soldier who killed personnel at the Iraq stress clinic are treated badly by their commanders and peers.
