WILMINGTON -- Unseasonably hot with more heat on the way. People doing everything from running to lounging in the shade and they had one goal in common: beating the heat. Tips to remember when temperatures rise are to keep yourself hydrated, stay in the shade, and wear sunscreen. If you choose to exercise outdoors try to do it in the morning or evening. Pushing yourself can lead to heat stroke. Heat stroke symptoms include a body temperature of higher than 103 degrees, dizziness, a rapid pulse and being extremely hot but not sweating. The best thing to remember in the heat is don't over-do it. Wrightsville Beach lifeguard Jeremy Owens said, "The most important thing is to pay attention to your body. Stay hydrated is number one and if you start not feeling good then get in some shade, don't push yourself and get in some air conditioning." If do you experience signs of heat stroke, get to a shady area as soon as possible. Other tips: cool your body with water or a wet towel and immediately call for medical assistance. Today Governor Easley announced the start of Operation Fan/Heat Relief. The summer-long program provides free fans to eligible people age sixty and older throughout the state.
