‘Tis the season to spread Christmas cheer. Burgaw officially lights its new Christmas tree on the courthouse square Friday night. It starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday night at Carolina Beach it is the Island of Lights Christmas Parade. It starts at 7:30 p.m. Head back to Pleasure Island Saturday for the Holiday Flotilla. A parade of fishing boats, decorated with thousands of lights, will make their way up the Carolina Beach inlet. It starts at 6:00 p.m. Meteorologist Chris Phillips will be one of the judges. Artists are using unused commercial space at Mayfaire to sell things like paintings, pottery and photography. Hours Friday and Saturday are from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Sunday it is from noon until 6:00 p.m. Saturday, it is Tuba Christmas Day! At least, that's what Mayor Bill Saffo will proclaim. You can catch a Tuba Christmas Concert at noon at Westfield Independence Mall, or at 2:00 p.m. at Brightmore of Wilmington. The concerts are free. The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra rings in the holidays with music from the Nutcracker, as well as other Christmas classics. Saturday's performance is at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday's is at 4:00 p.m. Both take place at UNCW's Kenan Auditorium. Seats start at $21. Get them at the Kenan Box Office. The Polar Express returns to the Wilmington Railroad Museum. Bring the kids and let them hear the story read by members of the WWAY family, including Marcy Cuevas, Kevin Wuzzardo, Steve Rondinaro, Chris Phillips and Meghan Torjussen. The shows are at 4:30 and 6:30 Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $5 per person. If you are in Brunswick County Saturday, take an Island Home Tour on Ocean Isle Beach. It is from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person. You could also tour old Wilmington by candlelight. It is the lower Cape Fear's 36th Annual Tour of the Downtown Historical Residential Area. Tickets are $25. Hours Saturday are from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., Sunday from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. The third annual Community Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration begins at 2:00 Saturday in the Warwick Center Ballroom at UNCW. The event is free, but canned food and non-perishable items will be collected and donated to Meals on Wheels. The Columbus County Community Farmers Market is holding the 3rd Annual Christmas from the Heart Craft Show and Sale Saturday. It is from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Admission is free. On Sunday, gather in downtown Wilmington for the annual Christmas parade. It starts at 5:10 p.m. at North Front and Walnut streets. Also Sunday, Poplar Grove Plantation is holding a Christmas open house. It runs from noon until 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. There is also a Chanukah shopping spree and used book sale Sunday.
