Couple loses apartment to fire, belongings to neighbors

READ MORE:
Imagine your home going up in flames. Now think about your neighbors digging through your scorched belongings. That's what one local couple is dealing with. That couple says the weeks since the fire have been tough. Fifty-two years of memories lost, many of which they say have been stolen. It's been more than a month since a fire destroyed Evelyn and Kenneth Mills's apartment. The couple had been out running errands and came back to find their home burned and boarded up. The flames scorched dozens of priceless possessions that the Mills later learned were being picked up by former neighbors. Evelyn Highfell-Mills said, "I did confront a couple of the neighbors about it and they said that they were told that they had a right to go in there and get what they wanted. And the landlord even told them you can get what you want." That landlord has since stopped working for university arms apartments. The current property manager could not be reached for comment. The Mills say they still don't know how the fire started, and although they have received their apartment's security deposit back they have not received any other reimbursements from the apartment complex.
