NHRMC, Adopt-a-Family program help those in need

New Hanover Regional Medical Center's ambulances doubled as delivery vans this morning. For 15 years, the Adopt-a-Family program has been a tradition at the hospital. This year, Santa and his helpers packed five ambulances and a 32-foot trailer full of gifts for 65 families in need. Gifts ranged from bikes and TV's to basic toiletries. More than 65 hospital departments participated in donating and wrapping gifts. “It means to me personally, giving, shows how much people care and how we all come together as a family. In the end it's a lot of fun,” said Diane Jacobs of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Paramedics dropped the gifts off at the Salvation Army, Domestic Violence Shelter and Wilmington Interfaith Hospitality Network at Willow Pond. Although the hospital employees do not get to meet any of the families, organizers said they sometimes receive letters after the holidays.
