Sharmane Sykes-Harper is a single mother of four, so it is no surprise she has a long Christmas list, but one toy took priority this year. "Dora was definitely at the top of my list because she's a real hot commodity and she goes really quick," she said. Sykes-Harper is one of four students to receive Wal-mart gift cards from the college's Holiday Helpers program. With funding from local businesses, the program is aimed at students with families. More than 100 students applied. "Many of our students, they are going to school, often they're working, and when the holidays come along they are very stressed on how they can provide holiday help for their families," said CFCC’s Kay Warren. Sykes-Harper grabbed a shopping cart and headed down the aisles hoping to check some items off her list. Among her purchases were clothing and toys. "I tried to get what I could, but you know, like I said, I'm blessed so whatever I don't have the Lord will provide it for me." Warren said this program is a gift that keeps on giving. "It has made everyone feel so good to truly know what the spirit of Christmas is all about." Sykes-Harper said she feels lucky to have the financial help during the holidays and said it's an experience she'll remember for a long time. In addition to financial donations from local businesses, Lowe’s Food donated turkeys and a boutique in Raleigh donated clothing to make this all possible.
