NC credit union warns ATM scam spreading statewide

READ MORE:
RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina police have confirmed customers of a statewide credit union have been swindled after crooks copied their ATM cards. The News & Observer of Raleigh reported the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union alerted customers this week. The credit union reported about 300 victims whose information was stolen at gas pumps and was used to drain their accounts. Raleigh Police spokesman Jim Sughrue (Shuh-GRU) says the credit union is not the only institution thieves have hit. The fraud involves bandits placing a device over an ATM card reader to capture data from a card's magnetic strip. A nearby camera records the card user punching in the personal identification number that matches the card. Crooks then clone the card to make withdrawals from the victim's accounts.
