Firefighters train at CFCC

READ MORE: Firefighters train at CFCC

Safety was the name of the game at Cape Fear Community College this weekend. More than 600 firefighters traveled from across the state to CFCC's Safety Training Center on its North Campus to take courses to advance their certification.

This real life training involved operating large ladder trucks, repelling out of a multi-story building, driving courses and plenty of others. The facility is fully equipped with low rise and high rise buildings that can simulate fire conditions.

The beauty about this place now is that the training facility has just recently opened, and for us to finally have the ability to use the facility is great," said New Hanover Co. Deputy Fire Chief, Cliff Robinson. "It gives the firefighters a real application of what's going on on a real fireground."

Perhaps more taxing than the actual drills was braving the elements. During most of the outdoor exercises Saturday afternoon the temperature hovered in the mid-30s with wind chills in the 20s.
