Rep. Sandra Spaulding Hughes says she will not run for the 18th District seat in the May primary. Hughes says she will not seek another term in the House of Representatives for "personal and family reasons." The announcement is the latest in a line of Democrats saying they will not seek re-election this year.

Local Democrats appointed Hughes to the House in 2008 to replace Thomas Wright, who was kicked out of the General Assembly. In November 2008 she won re-election. Now the former Wilmington City Council member will join senators Julia Boseman, Tony Rand and R.C. Soles on the list of Democrats who will not seek re-election.

"Certainly it does have an impact when you have a legislator who has been in office for a long time to resign," said New Hanover Democratic Chair Jim Morgan. "But it also presents opportunities for other people who may be interested in running."

The 18th District seat currently serves New Hanover and Pender Counties, but the district was ruled unconstitutional. So last year, the lines were redrawn. Parts of Pender County, currently in the 18th District, are moving to the 16th District starting with this election.
