Morning fire destroys home

A New Hanover County family is homeless after their house went up in flames this morning. The circumstances are rather strange.

The fire shut down traffic on College Road at one point this morning. According to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, the fire that destroyed the home at 4607 Tall Tree Lane off College Road is being investigated as an arson. Indications point to the kitchen as the area of origin. Most of the house was destroyed.

"You could see the flames through the trees, just from my house looking over," neighbor Drew Rosen said. "You know the reason it's called tall trees, there's a lot of trees. You can see the flames lapping up through the house."

Ed Flagler lived there with his wife Diane and their two grandchildren.
Neighbors say they saw him in his underwear outside the house as it was burning, shouting that he did it. No one was hurt in the fire. The investigation continues.
