Munley joins First Lady for President's speech

READ MORE: Munley joins First Lady for President's speech

Carolina Beach native Kim Munley was in Washington last night for the State of the Union address. She was invited in recognition of her efforts to take down the Fort Hood gunman in November.

Sitting at the right hand of the First Lady, Sgt. Munley was one of the President's distinguished guests. The eyes of the nation were upon her, both on Capitol Hill and here at home. It was the culmination of a long day of exciting events for Munley and her family.

"She's doing pretty good," her dad Dennis Barbour said. "She still has a lot of immobility from the recent knee surgery 12 days ago, but she's just so excited. I think she's running on adrenaline having been so busy all day long visiting our representatives both in North Carolina and Texas, where she is now residing."

Barbour says it was a proud day for the family.

"It's unfortunate that the situation that occurred in Fort Hood was the result of this," he said, "but because of her heroic efforts to help stop a very very tragic situation it's an honor to her and her family that she is being recognized"

The Munleys were invited to a reception at the White House following the State of the Union.
