Finally, New Hanover County has the option of electing a sheriff who is not a product of the good 'ol boy establishment. I was absolutely delighted to read today that Marcus T. Benson plans to run for this office. Frankly, he should have been elected in 2002. However, given the many false allegations that were perpetuated by the Causey camp and the patronage power of the Sheriff's office, Mr. Benson was denied that opportunity. Hopefully, people will recognize that the old guard is no longer viable and that we need someone like Marcus Benson to bring real credibility back to this department. It's time for new ideas and new leadership and Benson is the best thing that could happen to New Hanover County.
