Wet winter causes sludge to mount in NC city

READ MORE:

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- Weeks of rain and snow are costing some North Carolina cites extra to rid themselves of piles of sludge.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va., reported Monday that Elizabeth City is one city that has found the wet winter has made treating sewage more difficult and expensive.

The city normally pays about $9,500 every couple of weeks to haul nearly 400,000 gallons of sludge to local farm fields that use it as fertilizer. Those fields are too soggy to take the sludge, so it's been trucked to a landfill, costing about five times more per week.
