CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick argued that the threat of homegrown terrorism is real and defended herself against charges by Muslims in North Carolina that she was spreading fear about their religion.
The Charlotte Observer reported Myrick told a crowd of about 175 people that she has never condemned Islam or linked moderate Muslims with terrorism. She spoke at a town hall meeting on Thursday night.
The former Charlotte mayor said she wants constituents to understand that her concerns aren't about the rising visibility of the Islamic faith.
Myrick has said Islamic extremists are working their way into U.S. Muslim communities, infiltrating government institutions and influencing American citizens to attack their own country.
While members of a local Muslim group decided not attend the meeting, other Muslim groups did attend.
