1st DWI - $1000 fine, twelve consecutive weekends in jail, picture published in newspaper. Restricted license available (after fine is paid in full) if you work and need to drive, but with an administrative fee of $1000, repaid if you have no further violations of Chapter 20 in the next year.
2nd DWI - $5,000 fine, three months in jail, picture published in newspaper under "chronic offender" banner. No restricted license available at all. If you lose your job, too friggin' bad! You did it to yourself.
3rd DWI (felony) - $10,000 fine, one year in prison, permanent, irrevocable loss of license. Vehicle impounded, the same thing we do with guns when we find them on criminals. You and your car are just as deadly.
Icing on the cake:
A. Caught driving on a revoked or suspended license after 1st or 2nd DWI? Felony, three years in prison. Caught driving after your 3rd DWI? Ten years in prison.
B. All states input data into a centralized "Drunken Loser" database so that if one of them moves to another state and applies for a license, the bells and whistles start going off. As a matter of fact, let's make it a felony to even TRY to get a license in another state if you've lost one because of a DUI/DWI.
With the exception of the attorneys who make a bundle getting these bums off and these drunken losers themselves, no one should mind these Draconian penalties.
Oh, but for you few sob-sisters who bemoan, "He's sick, he can't help it," I respond, "Too bad that he's sick, but our main duty is to get him off the road before he kills someone like this bullet-head did. You don't let people with tuberculosis wander free in society, and we shouldn't let drunks pilot 6000 pounds of steel around in society.
Now I hate to disappoint you, but I'm not going to become Emperor any time soon.....so why not just demand these (or similar) penalties from your state legislators? Why give these threats to you and your kid's life one iota of consideration or care? Punish them, warehouse them, for all I care take them out and shoot them, but for YOUR sake, get them off the road!
