1 dead after police shooting outside Duke hospital

READ MORE:

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University police say two officers were involved in a deadly shooting outside the school's hospital that left one person dead.

The police department said in a news release that an unidentified person was shot early Saturday morning during an altercation outside the hospital's front entrance. Police said there was no indication the person was an employee, patient or patient family member.

Police Chief John Dailey says one officer was treated for a minor injury.

Dailey did not identify which officer was injured, but said the two involved in the shooting were 23-year veteran Larry Carter and Jeffrey Liberto, who has been on the force two years.

Few details were released because of the ongoing investigation.

Hospital services were not been interrupted, but the main entrance was closed and visitors routed to another entrance.
