Did you show off your green today? Cape Fear Community College did.

In order to prepare students for jobs in these emerging industries, CFCC is going green by launching a new program. It will be called the Sustainable Technologies Program. It's a two-year program gearing students toward jobs of the future.

The campus already has many of the tools it will use when the program starts in the fall. Today, instructors and students powered a microwave with solar panels outside. The college's alternative energy initiative has already installed a weather station as well as working solar panels which help to power the campus.

"We are converting that sun into electricity, and the students are learning these technologies and are part of applying that and they're really excited about it," CFCC Engineering Department Chair Shawn Russell said.

"It's great," electrical engineering student Bryan Rojas. "It's a lot of hands-on. A lot of information you take in. It's a good experience. I like the class."

Plans for this summer include installing a wind turbine to bring in more power and give students experience working on these machines. Some projects the faculty and students are working on right now include converting a car to run on electricity, and developing bio-diesel from vegetable oil.

Anyone who wants to get started can call the Cape Fear Community College admissions office at (910) 362-7000.
