AP presents North Carolina journalism awards

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Charlotte Observer is being honored for its work promoting freedom of information.

The North Carolina bureau of The Associated Press on Thursday named the newspaper winner of the 2009 Senator Sam award. The honor came for The Observer's work revealing hospital executives' compensation, which led to a change in state law.

The award is named for former North Carolina Sen. Sam J. Ervin and was presented at Thursday's meeting of the North Carolina Press Association.

Other awards given by the AP went to Betsi Robinson of the News & Record in Greensboro for excellence in editing, Elizabeth Leland of The Charlotte Observer for the best writing among large newspapers and Jimmy Tomlin of the High Point Enterprise for best writing among smaller newspapers.
