Wilmington resident Roy Turner was honored on Friday, March 19 as the National Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) during its national convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, March 16 – 20. Turner knew he was going to win the Southern District award which represents 12 states from Virginia to Florida and the District of Columbia. The national award was a pleasant surprise as Turner had to compete with the other regional winners.
The National Athletic Director of the Year Award is sponsored by Playworld Systems®, the leader in outdoor commercial playground equipment and the creator of ENERGI™ Total Body Fitness System. America’s most decorated gymnast, Olympian Shannon Miller, was inducted that evening into the NASPE Hall of Fame at the banquet.
According to NASPE President Dr. Stephen C. Jefferies, professor and director of graduate studies, Central Washington University, “By making a significant impact on the lives of students, Roy Turner has made an outstanding contribution to his school and community. He is also recognized as an administrator of an exemplary athletic program and educator who keeps athletics an integral part of the total education program.”
Charlie Adams, executive director of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, said “Roy is clearly the epitome of working at a very high level in administration and doing it very well at both the local and state levels. His work ethic is very strong and I have found him to be both adaptable and versatile. He demonstrates a high level of initiative and is certainly a self-starter along with being a solution seeker.”
Turner has many accomplishments in only four years at Ashley High School, including, creating a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote first-class fan conduct at Ashley sporting events, creating a student athlete advisory council which is designed to provide two athletes from each varsity sport with tools to be a more effective leader within their team and provide feedback about the athletic program, and implementing a general athletic booster club. He has also developed an Ashley High School Athletic Handbook, an athletic web site, and an emergency action plan and medical emergency procedures for all venues. The school now celebrates all senior student-athletes that lettered in a sport at the senior athletic banquet as well.
Among his most recent professional awards, he received the NCADA Athletic Director of the Year, NIAAA Frank Kovaleski Award for Professional Development, NCHSAA Athletic Director of the Year, NCADA Distinguished Service, and National Federation Citation, among others.
His professional affiliations and activities include the President of the North Carolina Athletic Directors’ Association, National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA), National Federation Coaches Education Instructor, and member of the NASPE-NIAAA Interscholastic Athletics Recognition Program, just to name a few. Turner received his undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and a Masters in Education from North Carolina A&T University.
Roy Turner will be on the Coach's Corner on Sunday, March 21 at 11:30am on WWAY TV.
