Fire roars through NC stable, killing 13 horses

READ MORE:

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- A fire chief says 13 horses died when a blaze roared through their stables on a North Carolina farm.

Authorities said the fire was reported at around 3:30 a.m. Thursday about 15 miles northwest of Chapel Hill.

Orange Grove Fire Chief Tommy Holmes says the blaze had burned through the barn's roof and the horses were dead by the time the first of about 40 volunteer firefighters arrived about 10 minutes
later.

Authorities say firefighters kept the blaze from an adjacent stable, saving nine other horses.

Holmes said the horses were likely owned by people who boarded the animals at the farm, which had a riding track.

The fire chief says investigators are on the scene trying to figure out what caused the blaze on Marions Ford Road.
