MORRISVILLE, N.C. -- The owner of a North Carolina company that sells devices to keep cars from starting if the driver is drunk has accused a former state senator of trying to force him to sell his business.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Sunday that Larry Mobley says former state Sen. Tony Rand tried to buy Mobley's Monitech in 2004. Until recently, Monitech was the only company approved to sell the ignition locking devices that allow people convicted of drunken driving to get their licenses back.
A lawsuit by a rival has led the state to invalidate Monitech's exclusive contract to sell the devices and reopen the bidding process.
Rand told the newspaper he doesn't remember meeting with Mobley or making an offer for his company.
