CERRO GORDO, NC (WWAY) -- After 20 days in Denmark, 12 stranded West Columbus High School students have made it back to the United States. Students were greeted by their parents at Raleigh-Durham International Airport around 6:30 Sunday evening. The students signed up for an 11-day study abroad program at a school in Denmark. But the ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland shut down European air-space, extending the trip by nine days. In the meantime, students have been trying to find free ways to see sights and sounds in Copenhagen. They raised $15,000 for the trip, but when the trip ran long, they ran out of cash. The extra time abroad has cost the county around than $1,000 a day.
