WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Azalea Festival is helping two Cape Fear Community College culinary students pay for their education.

The Azalea Festival presented a $1,000 check to the college's Culinary Technology Program. It will pay for two $500 scholarships for students studying to become chefs specializing in classical pastries and cakes.

The scholarships are funded with the proceeds from the Cake Challenge at last month's Azalea Festival.

"It always costs money to go to school, and you never have enough," lead culinary instructor Valerie Mason said, "so this will certainly help these students with gas money, tuition, rent money. There's so many things that the money can be used for, while these kids are going to school, so it's always wonderful to get any kind of tuition assistance or scholarship for our students."

Cape Fear Community College will choose two students next fall for the scholarships.
