Philadelphia officers' testimony allowed in Pierce murder trial

READ MORE: Philadelphia officers' testimony allowed in Pierce murder trial

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The judge has made a big decision in the Anthony Pierce murder trial, and today jurors got to hear about pierces criminal past. This morning, Judge Phyllis Gorham ruled to allow testimony from several Philadelphia police officers.

The officers were involved in a 1994 armed robbery turned shoot-out that Pierce was part of. Pierce's partner in the robbery shot at the officers, hitting one of them in the chest. Pierce ran off, and his partner was shot in the head by police.

Judge Gorham said she allowed the testimony because the armed robbery in Philadelphia and the high-speed chase last year in Wilmington both showed that Pierce had implied malice or ill will. Pierce is charged with second-degree murder because Wilmington police officer Rich Matthews died when he crashed his car trying to avoid a box in the middle of Shipyard Blvd. as he tried to join the chase.
